The Ponnie Family Root
A research conducted by Ambassador Willis Davies (A scholar on resettled America Slaves to Africa), commissioned by one of the great grandchildren of Timothy Ponnie. Approximately, over one hundred and fifty-one years ago (1865), our great, great grandfather Mr. Timothy Gleakain Ponnie descended to Maryland County and later resettled in Greenville, Sinoe County from Monroe, Louisiana USA. He was the only child of his parents and he was commonly known as James Ponnie.
In Sinoe, he became a schoolteacher with only 5th grade education. He moved to Butaw after few years and became a Paramount Chief. A village was named after him called “Ponnie’s Town”. Before his death, he was district commissioner.
